Hey @saintmichaels Class of 2016! Do you want to be an SMC Blogger?

Good morning, Class of 2016 (and incoming transfer students)!

As you may already know, my name is Gabbi and I am the Online Media and Communications coordinator for the Founder's Society, meaning I coordinate our SMC Blogs program. (Founder's Society also hosts our Tour Guide program as well Accepted Students Days/Phone-a-thons/Alumni Outreach.)

Some of you have expressed an interest in becoming an SMC Online Ambassador and joining the ranks of current students like Alexandra Elena and Marci Wood. As Online Ambassadors, we blog, tweet, interact with the incoming class on Facebook, and for many of us, give in-person tours. (To become tour guides, students go through a seperate application process.) The position is a real job, where students are asked to blog at least once a week and participate in KnightChats at least once a semester.

Every year, we search for interested students from the incoming class! We need to have you represented! If you are one of these people, please shoot me a message on Facebook or an email:! I'll give you more info about the process and answer any questions you have! I look forward to meeting all of you!

Being a Busy Bee (And the Best Intern I Can Be)

Time is seriously flying this summer. I've already been in LA a month. I really only have two months left here!

I am pleased to announce the arrival of my new work computer. To perform my intern duties to the best of my ability (many of these duties include design), I requested Adobe Design Suite. After talking with the IT guy, I was told I needed a new computer as well. Those are pretty hefty requests for an intern. I have an amazing boss and he approved the purchases. To my surprise, the IT guy ordered me two monitors. I've never worked on two before, but it is amazing! So much more room for activites! (Yup, that's a Step Brother's reference....) I was so excited to have Photoshop and InDesign open at the same time and be able to see both. Visually, it is so much easier to fit all the design pieces together! Needless to say, I'm a VERY lucky intern.

That being said, these past two days have been really stressful because I had some trouble getting Microsoft Office downloaded. I needed MS Office to finish the quarterly meeting presentation and I needed to edit video. I felt like a chicken with my head cut-off. I have found that it is best in these situations to take a deep breathe and make a to-do list. What can I do now? Who can I ask for help?

I eventaully got all set-up and decided to stay an hour later than usual to finish up the presentation. It was the first time I've left the office when the front doors were already closed! I then came in early today to finish the edits. I think an important part of being an intern is being able to anticipate how certain people will work, particularly the people you report to. For example, I know that I will probably be doing edits until 5 minutes before the meeting. There is always some last minute details to add or a transition to fix. I know it is best to have as much time as possible.

I am pleased to say that it all came together and looked fabulous, video and all! I have recieved very good feedback on the ppt. At least my stress came to a great end!

Another important part of being intern is dressing appropriately. I've made my fair share of intern mistakes and some of them have been clothing options. I'm imperfect, but internships are about learning. Luckily, now that I'm in my second intern summer and am a returnee to the same company, I feel more confident in my ability to dress appropriately. Below are my outfits from the past two days.

On Wednesday, I wore a BCBG dress, Banana Republic sweater, and Payless heels (not too high!).
Today, I wore a black and white print wrap dress from Banana Republic and gold, heeled sandals.

As you can see, I'm a big fan of dresses. They are easy to throw on in the morning and I like to pick materials that don't easily wrinkle. Often times, dresses can be worn with multiple pairs of shoes, accessories, and jackets. I love accessorizing! <3

Now, I'm going to finish out my day. I'm looking forward to meeting the Class of 2016 in August. 69 days, right?

Learning to Change the Toner (Valuable Intern Skill)

It is never a dull day as an intern and today was a day for a new skill: changing to toner of my printer. To be honest, no one ever really uses this printer/scanner/fax, so I was just going to ignore the "Low Toner" flashing on the screen. Most of my tasks are digital and sent via email. I try to limit my paper use. However, my fellow intern decided it was time to do the deed, so she could scan and print. After grabbing a coffee, we embarked on our latest adventure.

By adventure, I mean walking to my boss' assistant, getting the toner, unpackaging the toner and then reading the simple instructions.

Now, what should have been a simple task turned into something of an ordeal. We couldn't get the old cartridge out. I didn't realize that the entire compartment where the toner lives comes out and so I was trying to shimmy the toner cartridge out. Christine and I had to call Katrina, our friend at reception, and she guided us via the phone. We felt really silly when the container popped right out.

Then, we switched the cartridge and closed up the printer.......

And we got an error message. Awesome. Naturally, our friend, Michelle from Compliance, walked by and gave us a quizzical look as I dismantled the printer once more. She stayed and chatted and together we go the printer functioning. Phew!

Then, Ecri came around the corner just as we were celebrating our victory over the toner cartridge. Christine asked what we do to dispose of the cartridge. Just as Ecri was saying that we send it back to the company, Rinaldo, the IT guy, came around the corner and said that he takes them to Staples because you get $3 for the old ones.

So that's what I learned today. How to change the toner in the printer and where to recycle the old ones. Next up, I need to learn to transfer a call. :-P Oh the intern life. Follow #glamtern for all my internship updates!
